Space 1999: Review: Dorzak
“Dorzak”, the 21st episode of Season 2 of Space: 1999, is a proper psychological trip. The plot centers on a prison ship landing on Moonbase Alpha with a heavy-hitter prisoner named Dorzak, who happens to be a Psychon just like Maya. Since Commander Koenig is away on a mission, Tony is running the show, which immediately changes the whole dynamic of the base. Maya remembers Dorzak as this peaceful philosopher and poet from back home, so she automatically backs him, refusing to believe he is the monster everyone says he is.
What makes this episode stand out is how it plays with your mind. It’s not just about flashy space battles; it’s a deep game of trust. Dorzak has these insane psychic mind-control abilities, and the alien guards wear head implants just to keep him blocked. As the story unfolds, you are stuck in the middle trying to figure out who is telling the truth and who is getting manipulated. The tension builds up naturally because Maya’s emotional attachment to her past totally blinds her to what’s actually happening right in front of her.
The absolute best part of the episode is the final showdown between Maya and Dorzak. When the mask finally slips, Dorzak drops some heavy philosophy, basically saying that the struggle for survival turns everyone into a monster. Maya stands her ground, proving that the Alphans haven’t lost their humanity despite all the madness they’ve been through. It’s a great piece of character development for her, forcing her to realize that her own people can be deeply flawed. Plus, seeing him try to force her to teach him her molecular transformation powers adds a wicked layer of danger to the climax.
Overall, “Dorzak” might not have the big action sequences of other episodes, but the suspense and the model work on the alien rocket ship are top-tier. Letting Tony and Alan take the lead roles for once gives the regular cast some well-deserved room to breathe and shine. If you love sci-fi that focuses more on psychological thrills and moral dilemmas rather than just lasers and explosions, this one is definitely worth a watch.
