Space 1999: Review: The Troubled Spirit

“The Troubled Spirit” is easily one of the most intense episodes from Space: 1999 season one. The whole setup hits you immediately because it dives straight into sci-fi horror territory. The story follows a botanist named Dan Mateo who is trying to communicate with plants to maximize food production on Moonbase Alpha, but his crazy experiments accidentally unleash a terrifying, vengeful apparition. It is a brilliant shift from the usual technical crises the crew faces, trading cold logic for pure, unsettling supernatural energy that keeps you locked in from start to finish.
What really makes this episode stand out is the atmosphere and the sheer terror of the “spirit” itself. The show uses these frantic, distorted close-ups and echoing screams that genuinely give you chills. The entity isn’t just some glowing light effect; it looks like a burnt, decaying version of Mateo himself, which adds a heavy layer of psychological dread. Seeing the clean, high-tech, futuristic corridors of Moonbase Alpha get haunted by what looks like a literal demon creates an amazing visual contrast that works perfectly.
Giancarlo Esposito’s performance as Mateo is where the emotional weight lies. He does a fantastic job showing a man completely consumed by his work, transitioning from a passionate scientist into a desperate, terrified victim of his own ambition. The supporting cast, especially regular heavyweights like Martin Landau as Koenig and Barbara Bain as Helena, play off his desperation beautifully. They bring that classic, grounded realism to the situation, trying to solve a ghost story with science and logic, which makes the stakes feel incredibly high.
